  • A Guide To Answered Prayer and God's creation
I am often asked about answered prayer and how does prayer work. Prayer is about relationship more than about answers. Our earnest prayers do not convince a reluctant God to act on our behalf, but rather, they provide an opportunity for us to open ourselves to God and to get to know Him. So as I looked up at the night's sky, a visita of God's creation was spread out before me, I realised afresh that however unfashionable it may be these days. The Book of Genesis gets amazingly near the truth - In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

  • A Healing For Terrorism
On the 1st July I visited a rest home situated on an Island off the west coast of Scotland and spent some time with its residents. On my way back to England I visited the Lockerbie Memorial at Dryfesdale Cemetery, where there is a memorial to the 243 passengers, 16 crew members(all representing 21 nations) and the 11 residents of Lockerbie who lost their lives on the eve of 21st December 1988 due to an act of terrorism.

  • A Holiday Out Of This World
It is now the start of a new year and the lucky ones among you will now be planning a new vacation. Where shall we go? We've Done Europe, we've done Asia and we've done the States. Yawn, where else do we go; off world maybe? Well recently, astronomers announced that they had made a giant breakthrough by finding something small. They turned up a planet that happens to be the most diminutive ever discovered beyond our own solar system, at least around a common type of star, a Red Drawf Gliese 876 . The object is roughly twice Earth's girth which, as planets go, is decidedly petite.

  • A Question of Faith
The Bible is the only book where the author is always present whenever it is read. In answer to the many questions I have received regarding faith, I am reminded of H G Wells. He was never a particularly religious man, but after he had studied the history of the human race and had observed human life, he came to an interesting conclusion: “Religion is the first thing and the last thing, and until a man has found God and been found by God, He begins at no beginning, he works to no end. He may have his friendships, his partial loyalties, his scraps of honour. But all these things fall into place and life falls into place only with God.”

  • Dealing With Stress
Everybody has to deal with unwanted, uncontrollable stress in their lives, natural disasters, and unexpected job loss, the death of a loved one, an accident, or an illness. All of these lie mostly outside of our realm of control.

  • Elementary, My Dear Watson.
Laughter and a good sense of humour, is the best medicine for a long and happy life. Take a playful attitude towards problems; toss them around, handle them with a light touch use laughter as a safety valve to keep you sane and relaxed. Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson went on a camping trip. In the middle of the night Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend. “Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see.”

  • For He Who Casts the First Stone.
We have all heard or read the story about the woman being accused of committing adultery being brought before Jesus by the scribes and Pharisees and that they had insisted that under the Law of Moses, she should be condemned to death by stoning.

  • Friendship
May is my favourite time of the year when spring has nearly completed its magical transformation of our wonderful countryside.

  • God and Extraterrestrial Civilizations
I believe within this decade that the leaders and followers of all faiths on this planet will need to begin contemplating a future which includes the existence of extraterrestrial life forms. When this happens, all our beliefs may be brought into question in the early stages of inter-planetary relations.

  • God’s Mercy Store
This story takes place in Texas where in the town of Waller "God's Mercy Store," a unique general store, was opened in 1918. Goods were marked at cost, and customers paid cost plus whatever profit percentage they felt was appropriate. Owner Mr A. D. Purvis an ex-farmer claimed that the store was established "by the spirit of Christ which is love, mercy, and self denial." The store always showed a tidy profit and was still operating in the 1930s.

  • How Strong is Your Faith
I often wonder if people’s faith is as strong today as that of our forefathers over a century ago

  • I Am One Of Them
A short time ago I fell very ill and had to take some time off from my duties. During that time I read to take my mind off the illness and came upon an article about the island of Molokai. Hardly anywhere in the world is there a lovelier spot than Molokai, the Pacific island is always bathed in sunshine, always fanned by soft and sweet airs. Yet this was once one of the world’s saddest places. A place where hope was abandoned. Where one’s suffering was intense, and loneliness was almost unbearable. For Molokai was the island to which lepers were sent to linger unloved until death brought release.

  • I Would Like To Tell You A Story
Once upon a time Aesop was sitting by the road when a traveller stopped and asked him. “What sort of people lives in Athens?” Aesop embodies an epigram not uncommon in human history; his fame is all the more deserved because he never deserved it. The firm foundations of common sense, the shrewd shots at uncommon sense, that characterise all the Fables, belong not him but to all humanity.

  • International Day of Non-Violence
The United Nations General Assembly has decided to declare October 2 - the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi—as ‘International Day of Non-Violence’ in recognition of his role in promoting the message of peace around the world. The move to get the international community to pay tribute to Gandhi’s ideology was a follow-up to the Satyagraha conference organised by the Congress early this year and a subsequent campaign launched by the government. Speaking at the conference, titled ‘Peace, Non-Violence and Empowerment — Gandhian Philosophy in the 21st Century’, Congress president Sonia Gandhi had called for steps to get the Mahatma’s birthday marked as the International Day of Non-Violence. The resolution to respect the apostle of humanity and peace was moved in the UN General Assembly by India and co-sponsored by 120 of total 191 members. The resolution reaffirms the universal relevance of non-violence, the gospel taught by Gandhi through out his life and followed by many leaders world over to win the heart of the enemy. Almost all major players of the world like the U.S., Russia, China, Britain, France, Germany and countries from subcontinent like Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bhutan are among those co-sponsoring it. The resolution stresses the need for non-violence, tolerance, full respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, democracy, development, mutual understanding and respect for diversity as reinforcements for peace and growth of mankind.

  • Is Your Life Full
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

  • It was a very happy household
It was a very happy household. There was Leopold, a fine musician, who was the Vice-master of Bishop's Chapel in Salzburg, Austria. There was his adoring wife and his young daughter Marianne and then there was his son little Wolfgang, a child not quite four years old. Marianne was learning to play the harpsichord, and day after day the hand-some Leopold stood behind her as she practiced in the drawing-room upstairs.

Lest We Forget. On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month…. Remembrance Day held on 11 November, is a special day set aside to remember all those men and women who were killed during the two World Wars and all other conflicts since. At one time the day was known as Armistice Day and was renamed Remembrance Day after the Second World War.

  • Let’s talk about the Weather
The autumn season which is another of my favourite times of the year, even if it does herald the approach of winter and shorter, colder days. I love the shades of brown, red and yellow which the leaves turn, giving the trees a truly majestic beauty. I love the smell of wood smoke that seems to permeate the air at this time of year and the early morning frosts that transform the landscape into a glistening wonderland. The thought of nature’s bounty to come; wild mushrooms, chestnuts, sloes and black berries. Even in the autumn of our lives there is a rich harvest to be had.

  • Life After Death
I am often asked the age old question what happens after death. While some believe it's impossible to know whether there is life after death, belief in immortality is timeless. People of all times and places in history have believed that the human soul survives death.

  • LINDISFARNE
I had the pleasure of visiting Lindisfarne. This was the name given to the Island by the first Anglo-Saxons to live there and we do not know the meaning of the word. But the monks of Durham, after the Norman Conquest, added the words Holy Island when they looked back over the story which began with the coming of Saint Aidan and the building of the first monastery in 635AD, which continued with the ministry of the "very popular" Saint Cuthbert but then received a staggering blow from the Viking attack in 793AD. Both to the Durham monks who died as Christian martyrs in this pagan attack and the earlier saints made the Island what was deservedly named "Holy".

  • MY OWN TESTIMONY TO ANSWERED PRAYER
I don’t as a rule publish my own testimonies, but I thought this may be an exception being from my own personal experience and by sharing it with you, it may add strength to your own faith and belief in Divine healing. I myself contacted spinal meningitis at an early age and survived only to be left with a diseased ear. Over the years, right into adult life I underwent three major and two minor operations to remove tumours and to try and correct the problem. Because of constant discharge I had to wear a dry dressing in my ear for most of my life and suffer constant pain. I had resigned myself to the fact that this was a condition that I would have to put up with for the rest of my life.

  • Religious Healing in First-Century Christianity
The acts of miraculous healing by Jesus and his disciples form a major theme in the development of early Christianity. In particular, these New Testament accounts frequently portrayed healing as the casting out of evil spirits from possessed individuals. In so doing early Christianity established a model of behaviour for both sufferer and religious healer that would continue to modern times. What were the first-century contexts and possible sources for the emergence of early Christian healing? Masses of individuals believing themselves possessed by unclean or evil spirits sought the help of Jesus and his disciples. How can we understand this historical portrayal, its literary and behavioural reality? Does it bear a correspondence to our modern formulation of crowd behaviour and possession?

  • St Paul
Whilst holidaying in Malta I took the opportunity to visit St. Paul's Island where it is reputed that the vessel that Paul was being transported had been shipwrecked - but the location is still disputed to this day. The Island is a flat islet (or better St. Paul's Islands as they are two of them, which are separated, when the sea is rough) lying in St. Paul's Bay off the island of Malta.

  • Testimony To Answered Prayer
Recently I received the following testimony via email from a lady who lives in America. I was so moved by her demonstration of courage that I asked her permission to publish both her email to me and my response to her, so that it may help others who find themselves in a similar heartrending situation.

  • The City of Bath, Its Abbey and Roman Baths
The Abbey Church of Saint Peter, Bath, commonly known as Bath Abbey, is an Anglican parish church and a former Benedictine monastery in Bath, Somerset, England. Founded in the 7th century, reorganized in the 10th century and rebuilt in the 12th and 16th centuries, it is one of the largest examples of Perpendicular Gothic architecture in the West Country. The city of Bath now boasts a Roman monument unparalleled in north-western Europe. Scientific studies of the waters of Bath spring have revealed the presence of 43 different minerals including iron, magnesium, potassium, copper and radium. The prehistoric, Roman and early Christian people using the springs had no (known) way of determining the nature of these minerals yet none the less the springs have been venerated as a healing site since time immemorial.

  • The Serenity Prayer
The Serenity Prayer, God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him Forever in the next. Amen. Reinhold Niebuhr

  • The Verger and It's a Wonderful Life
It's a Wonderful Life I am sure that most of you have seen the movie before, but allow me to recap the highlights for those who have never seen the movie. The movie takes place in a little town called Bedford Falls, and it depicts the life of one individual, George Bailey, played by Jimmy Stewart. It begins when George is a young boy, growing up in Bedford Falls, working in the drugstore, playing with his brother and friends.

View Live Webcams From Lourdes france, where The "Message of Lourdes" is the words and actions that were exchanged between the Virgin Mary and Bernadette at the Grotto of Massabielle during the 18 Apparitions from 11th. February 1858 to 16th. July 1858. To understand the events which took place and the "Message of Lourdes" it is necessary to know the context of the Apparitions that Bernadette experienced Lourdes in the 19th. Century was one of the main places in the district with more than 4,000 inhabitants including nobles, notaries, advocates, doctors, officers as well as manual workers, tradesmen, slate workers, small artisans such as millers. Mills were plentiful; many were dotted around outside the town, along one of the streams that flowed into the Gave - the Lapacca. Bernadette Soubirous was born in one of these, the Boly Mill, on 7th. January 1844. The bankrupt family were living in the Cachot. On 11th. February 1858 Bernadette, her sister Toinette and a friend of theirs, Jeanne, went looking for wood on the meadows and led towards "the place where the canal rejoins the River Gave". They were in front of the Grotto of Massabielle. Toinette and Jeanne crossed the icy water, crying out with the cold; Bernadette hesitated to do this because of her chronic asthma. She heard "a noise like a gust of wind", but "none of the trees were moving". "Raising her head, she saw, in a hollow of the rock a small young lady, who looked at her and who smiled at her. This was the first Apparition of the Virgin Mary

  • Viva Las Vegas
I was fortunate to have spent some time in Las Vegas with my family over the Christmas holidays last year and I have never in my life seen so much humanity in one place or at any one time. • Why does God allow people to suffer?
I am often asked the question, why does God allow people to suffer? This is one of the most difficult questions for Christians to answer. The "problem of pain," as the well-known Christian scholar, C.S. Lewis, once called it; is the non believer’s most potent weapon against the Christian faith.

  • Winter
I don’t know about you, but at this time of year I do not like the cold. It makes me feel miserable - and, if I’m honest, a bit bad – tempered at times! Recently I came across an article about the Eskimos. It was by a writer called Gontran de Poncin, who had spent some time living with them.
