Leonardo Da Vinci's The Last Supper

On 25th December people from all around the world will celebrate one of the most important dates in our calendar; ‘Christmas;’ and the story of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ that will be acted out in Nativity plays everywhere. Thinking of Jesus brings another story to mind, and that is the story of "Pietro Bandinelli

The story begins with the painting of Leonardo Da Vinci's great masterpiece, "The Last Supper." Long, and in vain, had the artist sought for a model for his Christ. "I must find a young man of pure life," he declared, "before I can get that look on the face I want." At length his attention was called to a young man who sang in the choir of one of the old churches of Rome, Pietro Bandinelli was his name. He was not only a young man of beautiful countenance, but his life was as beautiful as his face. The moment he looked upon this pure, sweet countenance the artist cried out in joy, "At last, I have found the face I wanted." So Pietro Bandinelli sat as the model for his picture of Christ.

Years passed on, and still the great painting, "The Last Supper," was not finished. The eleven faithful apostles had all been sketched on the canvas and the artist was hunting for a model for his Judas. "I must find a man whose face has hardened and distorted," he said, "a debased man, his features stamped with the ravages only excessive living and a wicked heart can show." Thus he wandered long, in search of his Judas until one day in the streets of Rome he came upon a wretched creature, a beggar in rags with a face of such hard villainous stamp that even the artist was repulsed. But he knew that at last he had found his Judas.

So it came about that the beggar with the repulsive countenance sat as the model for Judas. As he was dismissing him Da Vinci said, "I have not yet asked your name, but I will now." "Pietro Bandinelli," replied the man, looking at him unflinchingly. "I also sat to you as the model for your Christ." Astonished, overwhelmed by this startling declaration, Da Vinci would not at first believe it, but the proof was at hand and he had finally to admit that Pietro Bandinelli, he whose fair, sweet face had been the inspiration for his great masterpiece the face of Christ, had now become so disfigured by the sins of a lifetime that no trace was left of that marvellous beauty which before had been the admiration of men.

The moral is clear. But it is also true that no man sinks so low that he cannot be raised up again.

The Spirit Of Christmas

One of the most important dates in our calendar is ‘Christmas,’ when people from all around the world celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. There is a surprising freshness about Christmas, it comes round once every year and yet it always brings with it a quality of magic.

Even though we may groan at the preparations that must be made, a feeling of excitement still runs through us all. Christmas is the one time of the year when an element of change comes into everyone’s life. We are forced to stop our hum-drum daily routine and take a few days break from our work and live in an entirely different manner to the rest of the year.

Christmas is universally respected. Everything stops for Christmas, even wars. I believe there was a touching moment in the First Great War when the two great opposing armies came out of their trenches, to wish each other a happy Christmas. Let’s hope that respect for, and observation of Christmas will always continue.

But what a pity that the spirit of Christmas is observed for such a short while. When Christmas Day was over the Great War continued and the two armies were both enemies again. And so it would seem to be with the average man and woman in the world. A spirit of generosity, a giving of gifts and good will to all, prevails for a short while and then we all go back to our daily lives and it all fades into the background.

So each year as we prepare for the happy event of Christmas, let us resolve to prepare in a positive and cheerful manner the other daily events in our lives. Let us also try not to lose sight of the beautiful message and spirit of Christmas, but keep it with us throughout the coming years, tuning in each day and every day to its goodness and beauty.

Praying

HEALING AND PRAYER

Jesus after He had come down from the mount and had healed the epileptic boy; said to His disciples “There is no means of casting out this sort, but by prayer” (Mark 9.29).

In the mind of Jesus, prayer and healing are inseparable. A cautionary note, however, needs to be sounded. It must not be assumed that there is nothing whatever beyond the power of prayer to accomplish, nor must it be expected that healing will automatically follow in every case. Paul’s thorn in the flesh remained, in spite of persistent prayer for its removal.

Why prayer results in healing in some cases and not in others is a mystery. That prayer and prayer alone has produced a cure cannot be disputed, therefore in spite of the fact that prayer for healing is still shrouded in mystery, we must still persist with it.

The last verse of a poem, which I came across, would seem to provide an appropriate ending to this article.

Yes we are always wondering,

wondering how. Because we

do not see someone, Perhaps

unknown and far away

on bended knee.

If prayer is the top priority to enable every man, woman and child to experience the healing power of the living Christ, then surely the challenge presented to each one of us is to be that – “Someone, perhaps unknown and far away, on bended knee."
